[de.NBI Cloud Tuebingen Production] Ceph Cluster Upgrade Completed – Important Upgrades for Both Regions

07.02.2025 - 13:48
Dear Users of the de.NBI Cloud Tübingen,

We are pleased to inform you that we have successfully completed the Ceph cluster upgrade at R2, marking the finalization of the entire upgrade process for our Ceph infrastructure.

As part of this upgrade, we also managed to change the operating system of the Ceph cluster nodes, particularly at R2, while handling nearly 3 petabytes of data. This was achieved with minimal disruption, ensuring that Ceph and OpenStack services remained highly available throughout the maintenance window(8 working days). However, we did experience an unplanned 10-minute hiccup during the upgrade of one Ceph node on last Wednesday. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

With this upgrade, Ceph-backed volumes have now been activated in OpenStack Cinder at R1, making it the default choice for both R1 and R2. However, users can continue using Quobyte volumes, as they remain available as an option. While Ceph is now fully integrated, we would like to emphasize that the Ceph-backed Cinder volumes at R1 are currently in an experimental phase. Therefore, we advise against using Ceph as a production volume at R1 at this stage. For now, we recommend still using Quobyte from the volume type list at Region 1 in OpenStack.

We appreciate your cooperation throughout this upgrade process. If you encounter any issues or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

Best regards,
Amir Balaghi
