Dear de.NBI Cloud Users in Tübingen,
as some of you know, a few weeks ago we introduced IPv6 as the new standard for the de.NBI Cloud Tübingen for reasons of future security and also necessity (IPv4 address shortage). While we still support IPv4, addresses are unfortunately still scarce and should be prioritized for valid reasons, such as running a web server.
At the moment, we are getting more and more requests from users who are not able to reach VMs with IPv6 addresses from their workplace, but in most cases this is not a problem for these users at home. We see the cause in outdated firewall configurations of some institutions that actively block IPv6 traffic. In a few cases, IPv6 is simply not supported in their infrastructure (also outdated). We can understand that the migration to IPv6 is not possible for the responsible IT departments for various reasons, or at least not in the near future. Nevertheless, we are working on our own solution to solve this problem and still not be dependent on the scarce IPv4 addresses in the future.
For this reason: if you are affected by this problem, please write us a short mail to: denbi@zdv.uni-tuebingen.de, if you haven't already done so. Then we will contact you personally as soon as the solution is implemented in a satisfying way.
If you have no problems with the new addresses, you can ignore this mail.
Anyway we hope you had a good start in the new week after the long weekend and hope to get back to the affected users soon with good news.
On behalf of the de.NBI Cloud Tübingen team,
Fabian Paz
